  • In-form Murray meets Tsonga in Wimbledon quarterfinal

    6/30/10 5:46 AM | Kelli DeMario
In-form Murray meets Tsonga in Wimbledon quarterfinal Andy Murray looks to reach his second Grand Slam semifinal of the season, as he faces Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday. The players are contesting their fourth career meeting.

World No. 4 Andy Murray holds a slender 2-1 head-to-head series lead over quarterfinal-round opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The pair last met at the 2009 Masters 1000 Canada, where a semifinal clash went to the Scot in straight sets. The Frenchman has a 1-0 edge in Grand Slams, having recorded his lone victory over Murray at the 2008 Australian Open. Wednesday’s battle marks their first encounter on grass.

The 23-year-old, on course to take his first Grand Slam title, has yet to surrender a set at the tournament. Murray continues to serve well during his 2010 Wimbledon bid, having tallied 60 aces through four rounds of competition.

The Scot will attempt to book his first semifinal berth since January, when he finished runner-up at the Australian Open.

World No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fought through two difficult rounds before posting a straight-set victory over qualifier Tobias Kamke in round three. The Frenchman followed with a success against 32nd-seeded compatriot Julien Benneteau, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Tsonga, through to his first Wimbledon quarterfinal, looks for his first semifinal showing since late February, when he sealed a run to the final four in Marseille.

Prediction: Provided he handles the Tsonga serve, Murray should move on in three sets.

Wow! Fed out. Very surprising to see fed faltering in the big poiunts rather than berdych.

Tsonga looking very strong early on, muzz is going to have to come on strong if he doesn't want to go the way of fed.

alex , 6/30/10 5:22 PM

Tsonga almost looks nervous with his minibreak

stu , 6/30/10 5:52 PM

And Andy loses his first set this tournament...

stu , 6/30/10 5:54 PM

muzz playing okay but tsonga just too strong for him. It's a bit like watching a teenager against a man at times with muzz lacking the killer punch.

alex , 6/30/10 5:56 PM

Alex you suck when it comes to predictions..................SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/30/10 5:58 PM

Yep, I was waiting for the comment :))

But at least I can spell okay :)

alex , 6/30/10 6:03 PM

lol!!!!!!!!!!!..................yeah!!!....lol!

Alex, we ALL suck at predictions, by the way!!

Monalysa , 6/30/10 6:06 PM

disagree alex, it's Andy's serve too erratic and Tsonga making few unforced errors.
I believe Rafa's rallying.

deuce , 6/30/10 6:23 PM

alex: hope u haven't deserted Andy cos 1 set all!!

deuce , 6/30/10 6:50 PM

andy came back; tsonga's power is so intimidating; i still get nervous when watching novak - tsonga ao 2008 finals replay.

rfzr , 6/30/10 6:50 PM

tsonga needs to control the errors a bit...without those he is quite fascinating to watch...

stu , 6/30/10 6:52 PM

Come on Andy, Rafa is waiting. :-)

phoenix , 6/30/10 7:21 PM

This is unfair. I have no issues with Muzza whatsoever, but I do want him to face at least one challenge. An injured Tsonga doesn't count.

stu , 6/30/10 7:30 PM

alex, deuce

you can now come out from the back of the sofa. reserve it when Andy meets Rafa.

phoenix , 6/30/10 7:35 PM

stu , 6/30/10 7:36 PM

phoenix: congrats on your man's win. He sure put paid to the critics.
stu: tsonga played lights out first two sets, hasn't he just run out of gas?

deuce , 6/30/10 7:37 PM

way out of gas now, we can expect a bagel.

phoenix , 6/30/10 7:46 PM

i could be wrong deuce, but i thought i heard becker say he had a problem with his thumb or big toe or something...and the way he's moving around the court i thought he might be injured...you're right tho, probably just exhausted...

stu , 6/30/10 7:51 PM

Great job top 4 minus 1 :D!

stu , 6/30/10 7:56 PM

hey deuce -

no I didn't desert, how could I ??!! I was just so engrossed and then enjoying that I left the keypad. Muzz's service percentage was actually good by his own standards in the fist set - 64% - but like you say he lost it when he needed it most and served (consistently) diabolically in the tie break. The second set like the first could have gone either way but after muzz broke him in that marathon game early in the 3rd set it was 'enjoy' from there on in. Anyway, HI FIVES :::)))

phoenix -

During the tie breaks I wasn't so much behind the sofa as in and out the room. I couldn't bear to watch and I couldn't bear to not watch, if you know what I mean.

monalysa -

At least my prediction was bang on in the one that mattered most :::---)))

alex , 6/30/10 9:14 PM

Congrats to Andy ... looking forward to Rafandy semi !!!

smr , 6/30/10 9:37 PM

Big congratulations... I mean BIG to Andy...
I must admit I was never for the guy... but he is great player, maybe to much defensive for me... but boy...he can produce from that crazy running all around the court... and bang!!! ...here come the bomb... strait on line!!!
And for me very important... in his interviews, his statements he's always very correct and fair.
All the best in continuation of Wimby... and to alex and deuce...
btw...Deuce ...come closer for that slap:-))))

zare , 6/30/10 10:30 PM

murray is honest and fair in his interviews and full of praise for the other top guys and the lesser ranked oponents too, very nice .

vamosrafa , 6/30/10 10:40 PM

Well done Murray for the win. Congrats to Murray and his fans, esp alex and deuce.

luckystar , 6/30/10 10:57 PM

thnx luckystar and vamosraffor good words about muzz.

commiserations to fed fans - it wd have been great to have the top 4 in the SFs.

rafa fans - remember how down you all were when rafa left oz injured again - well, the sun is shining again, he's won RG and back at #1 (as I predicted), so don't be too down when muzz beats him on Friday:)

That said, if muzz does get beat, he couldn't lose to a better guy.

alex , 6/30/10 11:08 PM

haha,nice one alex :)

vamosrafa , 6/30/10 11:20 PM

Thanx everybody! What great fans you all are!
Yes, the interviews are always honest, sometimes painfully so, and respectful I find.
I was just the same, alex, couldn't bear to watch, couldn't bear to not watch, then convinced myself he was playing much better when I wasn't watching! ye gods.
