  • Soderling battles de Bakker for Barcelona final berth

    4/24/10 4:07 AM | Kelli DeMario
Soderling battles de Bakker for Barcelona final berth Robin Soderling looks to reach his second championship match of the season, set to face Thiemo de Bakker in the second semifinal of the day on Saturday. The winner will contest the final against David Ferrer or Fernando Verdasco.

World No. 8 Robin Soderling bids for his second ATP World Tour final of the year, ready to take on first-time opponent Thiemo de Bakker Saturday afternoon. The 25-year-old Swede will make his fourth semifinal appearance in 2010, adding to prior successes in Miami, Indian Wells and a title-winning run in Rotterdam. Soderling heads into the final four clash with a 19-5 record, having recorded three straight-set victories this week.

The French Open finalist, contesting his third Barcelona tournament, has not lost a set entering into Saturday’s semi. Soderling commenced the event with a 7-5, 7-5 win over recent Houston champion Juan Ignacio Chela, then followed with an easy 6-3, 6-2 dismissal of 16th seed Feliciano Lopez in round three. The Swede continued his solid play in Friday’s quarterfinal, as he knocked out Eduardo Schwank in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Soderling has held 26 of 28 service games and tallied 23 aces through three rounds of competition.

World No. 67 Thiemo de Bakker made headlines once again, following his upset of third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinal. The 21-year-old fought for more than two hours, holding on to post a win in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Friday’s triumph signaled de Bakker’s second victory over a seeded player this week, as the Dutchman upended seventh seed Juan Carlos Ferrero in the round of 16.

De Bakker, playing in his Barcelona debut, has built an 11-6 mark in 2010. Should he pass through the semifinal, he advances to his first career ATP World Tour final.

Prediction: Saturday will be a tough ask for de Bakker, who might be feeling the effects of a challenging road to the final four. An in-form Soderling is fresh, and has played consistently well all week long. The Swede in straight sets.

Well, Robin Söderling had too much up his sleeve for Thiemo deBakker to cope with today. But the young Dutch talent can take heart from an exceptional week in his budding career. He posted wins over both JC Ferrero and JW Tsonga and showed he'd learned a lot during last week's master-class from Rafa by posting an identical scoreline when opening his account here, allowing his opponent just one game. One to watch.
