    2/24/10 8:52 PM | Kelli DeMario
Fish, Gulbis close night session in Delray Beach Defending champion Mardy Fish and Ernests Gulbis highlight a modest Wednesday evening session in Delray Beach. The players look for a spot in the quarterfinal.

    Mardy Fish vs. Mischa Zverev

Defending champion Mardy Fish is set to take on German Mischa Zverev for the first time Wednesday night. The American heads into the match with a 4-4 season record. The Sydney semifinalist began his title defense on Tuesday against Christophe Rochus of Belgium. Fish had rallied to level the match, when Rochus retired at 3-3 in the decider. The 28-year-old is bidding for his fourth Delray Beach quarter in seven attempts.

Zverev, ranked 86th at week’s start, kicked off his second Delray Beach tournament with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over eighth-seeded American Michael Russell. The German is 4-5 in 2010, aided by a semifinal finish in Marseille (lost to Llodra).

    Ernests Gulbis vs. Teimuraz Gabashvili

Ernests Gulbis trails round of 16 opponent Teimuraz Gabashvili 0-1 in the head-to-head, having lost their only meeting at the 2008 tournament in Bucharest. The Latvian has compiled a 6-4 mark this sesason, bolstered by a run to the final four in Memphis (lost to Querrey). The 21-year-old, making his second appearance in Delray Beach, won his opener over American qualifier Ryan Harrison on Tuesday. Gulbis struck 17 aces en route to a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory in an hour and 19 minutes.

The 104th-ranked Gabashvili posted his maiden win of the 2010 season on Monday, ousting top seed Tommy Haas in straight sets. The 24-year-old Russian had lost in the opening round of both the Australian Open (lost to Bellucci) and San Jose (lost to Querrey), then failed to qualify in Memphis.

I'm pretty sure thats the wrong Gabashvili-Gulbis H2H, they have played at least three times with Gabashvili winning them all, if memory serves

TennisFanE - Gabashvili will win this one.

RickyDimon , 2/25/10 1:26 AM

then bet on erno buddy. rick is on a i hate erno bender, so his judgement is clouded.

spadea , 2/25/10 3:28 AM

Why does he hate erno :) he is cool and winning things now and then...
And why would i bet, im too young

TennisFanE , 2/25/10 3:51 AM

TennisFanE - i dont hate Erno. Heck i just talked to him in Memphis and he was hilarious. I simply think he is going to lose to Gabashvili. If his knee is 100 percent, he will have a better chance.

RickyDimon , 2/25/10 3:55 AM

hahaha what a gasbag. why lie to people telling them that? your in a press room with a bunch of other people. erno didn't talk TO you he talked AT you. bet on erno kid, bc gaba can't win.

spadea , 2/25/10 4:26 AM

yeah 3 people at a table. good try tho.

and Gaba looked good against Haas, so check your facts there as well.

RickyDimon , 2/25/10 4:34 AM

ricky.dimon@tennistalk.com if anyone wants to discuss anything that isnt related this article (tho i know spadea doesnt have the guts to come out from hiding)

rest of this thread will be for discussion of these matches.

RickyDimon , 2/25/10 5:39 AM

I know you said not to discuss anything outside of the article, but I have to say this, why are some people so rude as to call the writer a gasbag? Do you have no class? Just because YOU think he is a liar, based on your assumptions, you publicly call him a liar? So immature!
Ricky, please tell us what he said? Word for word :) Or what you remember, thanks.

Jyocka , 2/25/10 7:01 AM

jyocka - email me if you want

in related news, this match is now at 11 AM Thursday due to rain

RickyDimon , 2/25/10 7:18 AM

TennisFanE-

did u get a chance to watch ernie in memphis?

he was great! but...had strapping on his knee and would have won the entire tourny, if it weren't for the knee.

i love gulbis but was wishing he'd jet back home to riga for a rest after making semi in memphis. went up 27 points in the rankings tho.....go gulbis! he should be in the top 20, of course.

zoey234 , 2/25/10 2:33 PM

Gulbis won 6-1, 6-4. He will play L. Mayer with a chance for revenge in the quarterfinals.

RickyDimon , 2/25/10 6:32 PM

Gabashvili will win this one. good call there rick. hahahahaha!

spadea , 2/26/10 12:21 AM

It's called a "call" for a reason, spadea, no one can read the future! Jeez, as though every prediction must be correct...specially with a guy as unpredictable as gulbis...

Jyocka , 2/26/10 6:57 AM

Jyocka well said. In fact I dont think anything could be dumber than putting money down on a Gulbis match. He can beat anyone 2 and 2 on any given day and also lose to anyone 0 and 1 on any given day.

That said, I'll take L. Mayer in 3.
