Tommy Robredo takes a break from his normal clay-court schedule to try his hand at the first 500 point event of the season in Rotterdam.
Tommy Robredo vs. Robin Haase
World No. 15 Tommy Robredo drew Dutch wildcard Robin Haase. The Dutchman has struggled with his ranking of late. He sits at 359 in the world, and he lacks in consistency – but he could still be dangerous to Robredo. Haase is playing in front of the home crowd, and he has the benefit of playing Robredo on a fast indoor surface that could keep the Spaniard uncomfortable.
The two men have played on just one other occasion. Robredo won that match handily, but it was on the Spaniard’s preferred surface of clay. The No. 5 seed should still pull out the win, but expect him to look a bit sloppy as he will need time to adjust to the surface.
Janko Tipsarevic vs. Florian Mayer
Big-serving Serb Janko Tipsarevic, ranked 36th in the world, will take on Germany’s Florian Mayer in a tough first round match. Mayer has had a good start to 2010. The German won a Challenger event to kick off the year, and he advanced to the third round of the Australian Open. He took a set from US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro before eventually losing 7-5 in the fourth. Tipsarevic had a good first tournament this year, but after his semifinal showing in Chennai, he was knocked out of the Australian Open in the second round by Tommy Haas of Germany.
The lightning fast indoor surface will favor Tipsarevic, who makes a living off his first serve. Mayer might make life difficult for a set, but expect the Serb to find a way to win.
