France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will take on Tommy Haas of Germany on Saturday for a place in the last 16 of the Australian Open.
Tommy Haas defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in their only previous competitive match. The German recorded a 6-3, 7-6(3) semifinal victory on the grass courts of Halle last year, en route to his first title since February 2007. Tsonga did, however, register a straight-sets win over Haas at the Kooyong Classic exhibition event last week.
World No. 10 Tsonga has made easy work of the two opponents he’s gone up against in Melbourne this week. He saw off Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight-sets in the first round before producing a mightily impressive display to beat American Taylor Dent 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The Frenchman has hit the ball with real authority and has looked solid in all areas of his game. He has shown no ill effects of the wrist and back problems that forced him to miss the Abu Dhabi exhibition and the Qatar Open in Doha.
Haas has not had life quite as easy as Tsonga. The World No.17 dropped the first set before disposing of compatriot Simon Gruel in his opening match and put in an erratic performance in his epic 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over Janko Tipsaervic in the second round.
When at his best, Tsonga is a truly fearsome opponent for any player. He can play all-court tennis, allaying clever net-play with flat, heavy groundstrokes. Haas, who is also capable of mixing things up very well, will have his work cut out living with the power of a confident Tsonga. He may take a set, but the Frenchman should prevail in four.
