Mikhail Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko will take the court in Valencia as the second round wraps up.
Mikhail Youzhny vs. Pablo Cuevas
This matchup was slated to be Mikhail Youzhny versus Juan Carlos Ferrero. Instead, Pablo Cuevas is into the second round and Ferrero is out of the tournament. Ferrero has been in poor form recently, but Youzhny has not, as the Russian’s ranking is currently 23rd in the world and climbing. He had an early exit in St. Petersburg to Denis Istomin, but that has more to do with fatigue than poor form. Youzhny went into St. Petersburg off two successive tournament finals (one of which he won).
Cuevas is a largely a clay court player, and while his win over Ferrero was impressive, don’t expect him to repeat the effort on Thursday. Youzhny in straight sets.
Nikolay Davydenko vs. Juan Monaco
No. 7 seed Nikolay Davydenko is trying to secure his spot in the top 8 in the world at the World Tour Finals in London. The Russian is currently No. 7, but he could still lose his position to a number of other contenders. Davydenko should be fresh going into this second-round match. He won his third career Masters event in Shanghai over Rafael Nadal, followed the big victory up with a first-round exit in Moscow to Marat Safin, and he has not played tennis since.
His opponent is Argentine clay-courter Juan Monaco, who is ranked 30th in the world. Monaco’s good results come almost exclusively on the dirt. He is capable of winning a few early-round matches, but a hard-court player of Davydenko’s ilk will likely be too much. The Russian in straights sets.
