Marat Safin will square off against Ernests Gulbis in round two at the LA Tennis Open on Wednesday. The players vie for a spot in the quarterfinals.
(3) Dmitry Tursunov vs. (Q) Carsten Ball
Third seed Dmitry Tursunov begins his 2009 campaign at the LA Tennis Open Wednesday afternoon. The Russian faces Australian qualifier Carsten Ball for the first time, set for a second-round clash. The 26-year-old, heading into the match with a 14-13 record, makes his second stop on the US Open Series. Tursunov reached the quarterfinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships before bowing out to Frank Dancevic in three sets. The world No. 29, playing in his fourth LA Tennis Open, advanced to the finals in 2006 (lost to Haas).
The 205th-ranked Ball defeated Marc Gicquel in the first round on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Australian qualifier makes his Los Angeles main draw debut this week, having failed to pass through the qualifying rounds in 2007.
(8) Marat Safin vs. Ernests Gulbis
Eighth seed Marat Safin takes on Ernests Gulbis in the second round on Wednesday. The Russian won their only meeting to date, posting an opening-round victory at the 2008 Australian Open, 6-0, 6-4, 7-6.
Safin defeated last week’s Indianapolis champion Robby Ginepri in the first round. The 29-year-old Russian battled back from a set down to dismiss the American, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The former world No. 1 is competing in his final LA Tennis Open.
Gulbis, ranked 62nd in the world, took out Yen-Hsun Lu in the opening round Tuesday afternoon, 7-5, 6-2. The 20-year-old Latvian has struggled in 2009, unable to win back-to-back tournament matches since the 2008 Masters Series Cincinnati.
Marcos Baghdatis vs. John Isner
Marcos Baghdatis and John Isner meet for the first time Wednesday afternoon, set to contest a second-round match. The 24-year-old Cypriot took out Frank Dancevic in the first round, 7-6, 6-3. With the win over Dancevic, Baghdatis secured his maiden victory at the LA Tennis Open.
The 77th-ranked Isner upset seventh seed Benjamin Becker on Tuesday, 7-6, 7-6. The 24-year-old American is playing his second US Open Series event, following a run to the semifinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships (lost to Ginepri).

Normally this would be a tough one to pick since you never really know what you are going to get from either player on any given day. Right now, however, you can assume what are you going to get from Gulbis is going to be bad.
I'll take the Old Safin (Safin) over the New Safin (Gulbis) in straight sets.
