    6/24/09 4:21 AM | Kelli DeMario
Djokovic in second-round action on Wednesday Novak Djokovic takes to the court against qualifier Simon Greul Wednesday afternoon, set for his second-round match at the Wimbledon Championships. The two battle for a place in round three.

Novak Djokovic made a successful start to his 2009 Wimbledon campaign on Monday, rallying from a set down to defeat Julien Benneteau in four sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. The World No. 4 overcame patchy of sloppy play, but kept his cool on serve to strike 14 aces on the afternoon. With a victory in the second round, the 22-year-old will equal his Wimbledon results of a year ago, having fallen to eventual semifinalist Marat Safin in straight sets.

Wednesday afternoon’s clash marks the first time Djokovic and Greul have played an ATP World Tour level tournament.

The 28-year-old German, ranked 106th in the world, passed through two rounds of qualifying before gaining entry into the event. Greul, playing in his second Wimbledon Championships, is 3-5 on the season. The German debuted at the tournament in 2006, bowing out to Tommy Robredo in the opening round, 2-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-7.

Greul won his first-ever match at the Championships on Monday, knocking out American qualifier Michael Yani in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Raindrops , 6/24/09 3:27 PM

nole's winning =P

mriiidula , 6/24/09 3:32 PM

i feel like djokovic is trying some new tactics, practicing his serve and volley, especially when he is a little ahead in the set...

stu , 6/24/09 3:50 PM

..he needs much better volley in his next match against Mardy Fish... (this one is already "finished", I hope)

OllyK , 6/24/09 3:56 PM

Fish is going to be a real test for Novak, not sure if he can get through with his current form?

posmatrac , 6/24/09 4:02 PM

Fish lost a set against Tipsy. Makes me wonder about his form too, though I didnt watch the match.

Commentators gave Djoker a 6.5/10 for this match!

stu , 6/24/09 4:03 PM

really generous I think.

posmatrac , 6/24/09 4:07 PM

Haha, i was gonna say...this last set i'd say 3/10 at the most...

stu , 6/24/09 4:08 PM

He won!! But he's not satisfied at all, which is good! :) Here comes posmatrac, our pessimist.. :P

OllyK , 6/24/09 4:10 PM

posmatrac, we're not very good Nole fans are we?

stu , 6/24/09 4:12 PM

we are, but I'm annoyed with his struggling, i wish he could bring back his AO 2008 game!

posmatrac , 6/24/09 4:15 PM

Didn't get to watch this match. TV only gave updates and showed a point here or there. Sharapova vs Dulko match was on at the same time. Why is this website only dedicated to men's tennis? I know that men's tennis is more exciting than the women's but shouldn't the women's get some mention?

I have faith in Nole. He has proven himself a worthy opponent of the best and conducts himself with great pride. I feel the hunger is there in him, is just not as noticeable in him as others but it IS there!

fan4tennis , 6/25/09 5:35 AM

postmatrac, we are annoyed with your negative energy. How about a little positive for a change. Nobody is perfect, Nole is not perfect but we have to have faith in him.

zikili , 6/25/09 8:08 AM

yeah agree zikili.

posmatrac, I even spring out from my shelter just to feed positive energy to Novak remember that.

AJDEEE Nole

Raindrops , 6/25/09 12:38 PM

he shouldn't be struggling with players ranked 50 and above, simple as that; now Mardy Fish became a valid threat!? Many reasons for annoyance.

zikili, you should be more concerned with Novak's negative energy rather than mine, if it helps you let off steam I can ack your comment.

posmatrac , 6/25/09 6:15 PM

nole will silence us all zikili. fish in straights, then robredo in straights. the QF might be his first big challenge before federer, but i see him getting to the QF atleast. if he finds his form, maybe the semis and beyond..

i wish he had murrays draw tho! sometimes when you are out of form you could do with a little luck!

stu , 6/25/09 7:00 PM

Every player can be a threat but Nole has a 2-0 H2H against Fish. I think this is where Nole's experience in slams will help him. I just find it hard to think that Nole will lose to Fish (sorry Fish fans).

fan4tennis , 6/25/09 9:14 PM

I hope you're right f4t but with the state of mind that Nole is currently in, I don't think previous H2H records are anything to go by. He had a similar (even slightly better) H2H against Tommy Haas. Not to mention numerous other people he has lost to this year like Gulbis and Nieminen who got 3rd time lucky.

I find it hard to assess Nole's game on grass because I haven't seem him play much..

stu , 6/25/09 9:44 PM

I don't think Fish and Nole have ever played together on grass. I think their H2H is all on HC. So their games will be semi-new to each other, considering I'm sure they've watched tapes of the other on grass. That's why I think that Nole's experience in slams will come in handy. Maybe calmer and not as nervous. He is playing under the radar as one article said so less pressure too.
