Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro will square off at Roland Garros on Friday afternoon. With Federer seeking his first French Open and Del Potro in search of his first Grand Slam, a spot in the title match is at stake.
It seems like the stars have aligned for Roger Federer to capture his first French Open title and equal Pete Sampras with 14 Grand Slam triumphs.
World No. 1 and four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal is out of the way. So, too, are Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Only Juan Martin Del Potro, Fernando Gonzalez, and Robin Soderling stand in Federer's way.
It will be Del Potro who gets the first crack at Federer, and they will be squaring off for the sixth time in their careers on Friday afternoon in the semifinals. Federer leads the head-to-head series by a perfect 5-0 score, including 1-0 on clay. They most recently met in the semis of the Masters Series Madrid, where Federer prevailed 6-3, 6-4. Their other 2009 encounter came in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Federer, who has never lost a single set to Del Potro, dominated that meeting 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.
Although the Madrid clash was far from encouraging for Del Potro, clay should give him his best chance of upsetting Federer. While it is the Swiss' least favorite surface, Del Potro should be just as formidable on the slow stuff as he is on hard courts. Two of the Argentine's four consecutive titles during the summer of 2008 were captured on dirt, and he upset Murray to book his place in the Madrid semis. The world No. 5 has been in stellar form this season regardless of surface, reaching at least the quarterfinals in eight of nine prior tournaments, including a title in Auckland and his quarterfinal appearance at the Aussie Open. In Paris, Del Potro dispatched Michael Llodra, Viktor Troicki and Igor Andreev--all without losing a set--before ousting Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four to reach the quarters. The 20-year-old then hammered Tommy Robredo in straight sets to clinch his forst Grand Slam semifinal.
In Federer, Del Potro will be facing by far his toughest opponent of the fortnight. The world No. 2 owns a 31-6 match record in 2009, a mark that is extremely impressive by almost anyone else's standards. For Federer, however, it leaves a little bit to be desired. If he was slumping earlier in the season, Federer got just what he needed by earning his first ATP title of the year last month on the clay courts of Madrid. He has certainly capitalized on that momentum in Paris, but not without a struggle. After ousting Alberto Martin, Federer dropped sets to Jose Acasuso and Paul-Henri Mathieu. The 13-time Grand Slam champion then came back from two sets down against Tommy Haas in the fourth round. In Wednesday's quarterfinals, Federer was finally at his best in a straight-set victory over Gael Monfils.
Their head-to-head record notwithstanding, Del Potro actually has the tools to give Federer some problems. The underdog moves extremely well for his size (6'6'') and blasts heavy groundstrokes off both wings. Nonetheless, Del Potro has almost nothing going for him as he heads into this matchup. Federer is immeasurably more experienced at this stage of a Grand Slam and there is almost no way his opponent will be able to block their past history out of his head. Del Potro's only realy chance is for Federer to endure a dismal serving day, thus getting opportunities to fire away at second serves.
Don't count on that happening. Instead, Federer should roll over Del Potro in straight sets for the sixth consecutive time. At that point, he'll be one win away from history.

Good job, Ricky.
I can't help but be nervous, too, Arvis! Fed will keep his nerve and do it (and meanwhile, hoping for Soderling/Gonzo to go 5 tough sets). Go Fed!!!
Rafterfan , 6/5/09 12:13 AM
The best that can happen to Federer is having an easy win over Delpo and that Gonzalez and Sodderling get heck tired having a long match (so whoever wins won't have enough energy to fight FedEx).
I'm nervous too guys, since this is very important for Fed to win and if he doesn't he will be very disappointed and that may lead to depression for a future. I don't know you guys, but i don't wanna see FedEx cry again or i may cry too. DD:
Ariel , 6/5/09 12:48 AM
Don't worry guys, it shouldn't get there. We may get some tight nervous moments but that will be all. With his experience and winning record against the remaining contenders, he should pull through. Only way he will lose now is if he indulge himself in history before he actually gets the trophy, has a terrible off day and his opponent firing.
cable , 6/5/09 1:28 AM
Federer should win this match even playing bad... but I won't be surprised if Delpo takes it to a 4th set.
Emiliano55 , 6/5/09 1:34 AM
In Wednesday's quarterfinals, Federer was finally at his best in a straight-set victory over Gael Monfils.
Ricky.
I beg to differ Ricky, how was Fed at his best on Wed night?? Monfils was a disgrace, feeding balls to Fed in the middle of the court and inviting Fed to attack and did u see the number of forehand errors he's made in the first set?? Soemthing like 10 unforced errors in the first 15 points or something, hardly convincing is it??
As much as i hate Soderling, i actuall quite like his playing style, being very aggresive and taking initiatives and as far as tennis is conerned he has provided the most amount of entertainment out of anyone. I just hope he also wont choke in the final like everyone else did against Fed, tho thats more of a wishful thinkin, the writings on the cup, Fed's already got his name on the 2009 RG in the cheapest possible way. Rafa must be feeling so very sick seeing how someone could play the kind of rubbish tennis on clay day in and day out and still wins it.
But hey, this is French for you, it's a big joke, if the likes of Martin Verkerk, Magnus Norman and Albert Costa can make it thru to the final and even win it, we shouldnt be too surprised that Fed will do so too.
Hope Wimbledon will bring back some much needed justice in this very unjust world.
AZN2NVY , 6/5/09 1:41 AM
Hey Azn
I can see u have come back for round two. Ding ding ding. lol
Anyway thier is a lot to be desired in Gonzo's game also. I mean didnt you watch his match with murray? He was fantasic (and he is pretty aggressive if you like that style). I seem to be going on about Gonzo but i absolutely love his game and in addition his personality is more desirable and acceptable than soderling. Gonzo has one B..E..A..U..T..I..F..U..L forehand just beautiful its like a bullet.
TopDog , 6/5/09 2:10 AM
Way to beat Fed is just to go out there and fight without any respect to what he has achieved and what he may be.
posmatrac , 6/5/09 2:43 AM
AZN2NVY, you are obviously a sore loser who won't accept defeat gracefully. Federer has a record of something like 20 semi-final appearance in grand slam, and still counting. You can't get that on just pure luck. He has shown some courage and determination by coming from behind to win matches against Berdych (AO'09) and Haas (FO'09). Sure, sometimes it's not the prettiest of wins or scoreline, but that's what champions do... somehow finding a way to win when they are not at their best. I am sorry for all the other players who have come close but could not hold their nerves enough to close their match against him. If they can't beat him when he's playing poorly, then they don't deserve it. That's life. Cop it on the chin and move on.
cable , 6/5/09 2:49 AM
Indeed a meeting halfway across the sky .... These two men have been outstanding throughout this tourny and I wish them the luck. But I shan't take sides. Although I do hope Roge will survive to see a title here at last. Ridiculous how it's never happened before but I'm still against big events such as this on clay. Amazing though how it does seem smooth and easy on it but yet is really an uneven surface. Such a thing can be crucial I reckon,...
TAFARIANA , 6/5/09 2:53 AM
AZN, it might seemed like Monfils played bad and this is true but it's hard to play Fed when he uses so many tricks and deceiving shots. Rafa manages to win because he provides a different problem to Fed which is the whipping left-handed topspin but I feel that the players are getting more used to Nadal's ball now especially tall players with a double-handed backhand.
People adjust to the top players' game. When Fed is no.1, everybody analyzed his game and so we have 2 out of the top 4 players specifically adjusting their game to Fed (Nad and Murray). Now Nadal is no.1, a lot of players are getting fitter and stronger and adjust to Nadal's game which is just to outlast Nadal and not be afraid by him. So Monfils is one of the guys and also Delpo. But when they meet Fed, they found out how much tricks he has and variety he has as is basically shell-shocked even if they have beaten Nadal.
torres9 , 6/5/09 3:04 AM
It absolutely gives me the shits to see Hass and Acasuso playing Fed, they both outplayed Fed by a country mile yet unexpectedly hit suicidal mode right at the cross line. If this is not rigged then I don't know what is.
Sure Fed at his peak was playing some decent tenis, but its just pure and simple rubbish from this guy these days.
AZN2NVY , 6/5/09 3:05 AM
Greetings FEDfans! :) Tomorrow is the another BIG day for our/the FED, but I feel it is a BIGGER day for Del Potro. Del Potro will give it his best shot, but not likely will it be his day tomorrow. RIGHT NOW the FED is DETERMINED, A HUNGRY BEAST READY TO STRIKE AND KILL! HIS ADRENALIN is PERKED! HE IS BLAZZING WITH FIRE! He is a very CLEVER MAN this ROGER FEDERER, AND a GENIUS of tennis. He will not stop! He will not let go! He will DICTATE with his HUNGER, and with his CLEVER MIND PLAY BY PLAY with SKILLS only known to Roger FEDERER [("THE MAN")]! HE WILL WIN!!! :) BELIEVE FEDfans! BELIEVE! :) Go FED go!
sky , 6/5/09 4:39 AM
hi everyone!! this is a big day for us!! hope Fed shows his best today...he needs to take the chance he has this year ...
AZN2NVY ,: Fed has not won the title yet, you're mourne has started a bit too early.but IF he wins it,he deserves it ,when you are that consistent to reach 20 semifinals in Grand slams in a row,u finally GET A BREAK...this will be an award for Fed's consistency IF he wins the tiltle...sth that Novak and Murray unfortuenately lack in slams...some ppl keep saying that Fed did not encounter a competition before and now 'better' players are out there...do they mean we did not have any Gonzalez or Kohlschreiber between 2004-2007 to outs Fed before the semis?I 'm not saying the new ones are not great, they are....but at the age of 27 Fed is STILL more consistent. don't belittle Fed's achievement...he has NOT won the title yet,and might NOT win it,but he has shown amazing consistency in slams.
niloofar , 6/5/09 5:13 AM
Oh God .......m too nervous ........ :(
but I m hoping for an easy victory for our Fed .......
I hope there won't be much of a problem for Fed in winning this match !!!
Common Fed .......just two matches away from ur dream title .....U can do it Mannn.......U can !!!!!
Go Roger Go............
tomnjerry2 , 6/5/09 5:30 AM
Ricky............i really enjoyed reading your article........
what a day for tennis!!! Go:FED:Go.....be the 'smooth assassin' today...be ON FIRE!..STRONG!...CONFIDENT!
Sure Fed at his peak was playing some decent tenis, but its just pure and simple rubbish from this guy these days...' AZN....stop this....this ISN'T even a balanced argument from you.....the guy is I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E...deal with it!! To even describe his tennis as 'decent'...is like you are describing a nice cuppa tea!!!!! use some superlatives please......like AMAZING! DRAMATIC! INSIDE OUT TENNIS! Master of the racquet! C'MON! you can do better than that!!
Fedfans......cheers...enjoy the match and 'see' you then...
malteser1 , 6/5/09 7:50 AM
sorry guys...i meant to add this..but was too excited to post!
AZN...this kind of counteracts what you said earlier honey.....(sorry to disappoint you).
?There is no doubt Roger is one of the greatest players of all time, and he has a chance to become the greatest player of this era,? said Bud Collins, a broadcaster and tennis historian for more than 40 years.
Collins won?t compare players from different eras because of equipment changes and styles of play.
Sampras needed 12 years to win 14 Grand Slams; Federer?s run started six years ago at Wimbledon. Sampras never reached a French Open final; Federer has been to the past three, losing to Nadal each time. Federer was ranked No. 1 in the world for a record 237 straight weeks, and his run of Grand Slam semifinals also is the longest in history.
Grand Slam
And by winning in Paris, he would join Andre Agassi, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver and Fred Perry as the only male winners of each of the majors.
Agassi, the last man to complete the career Slam when he won the French Open 10 years ago, said Federer, who beat him for the 2005 U.S. Open title, was the best player he ever faced.
?It was always Pete throughout the bulk of my career,? Agassi told reporters following an exhibition at Wimbledon last month. ?Then when I played Federer in the finals of the U.S. Open, I was convinced at that point that the game hadn?t seen somebody like that yet.?
Federer?s game is based on a powerful forehand and serve, and blunting an opponent?s strengths by constantly attacking. Although he grew up playing on clay, he?s done better on faster surfaces, including five straight titles on Wimbledon?s grass courts from 2003 to 2007.
This year in Paris, he has played his best under pressure, coming back from two sets down to beat Tommy Haas in the fourth round and winning in straight sets over 11th-seeded Parisian Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals.
malteser1 , 6/5/09 7:56 AM
good one malteser!!! thank u for it!! here is another one:
Link: www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/rogerfederer/5445154/French-Open-2009 -Roger-Federer-deserves-to-make-history-says-Tim-Henman.html
Fren ch Open 2009: Roger Federer deserves to make history, says Tim Henman
Tim Henman doesn't really 'do' angry, but ask him if Roger Federer, the French Open favourite, is on the slide and he positively bristles.
Federer, who faces Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi-finals at Roland Garros, is two wins away from tennis history. A 14th grand slam title would equal Pete Sampras' record and give Federer a prestigious clean sweep of all four majors.
It would also make predictions about Federer's demise seem significantly premature.
"People don't appreciate how good Federer is," Henman told Telegraph Sport. "They say 'oh, that was a good shot', and you think no, hang on, that was an unbelievable shot. He just made it look easy.
"Federer won three majors in a year three times. No one has ever done that. There's two ways to go from there. You either win the grand slam or you come down a bit, and realistically you can only drop from that level.
"But the guy is 27. He's hardly over the hill. He's made 19 consecutive grand slam semis. I think the best before that was nine or something. It's a joke how good he's been. He's the best player I've ever seen, or played against. I'm not a massive fan of comparisons through the generations, but if you asked me to pick one I'd say he's the best player ever."
Many pundits cited this year's defeat against Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final - which left Federer in floods of tears - as the moment power shifted in men's tennis. But Henman reads nothing into such a raw display of emotion.
"Roger's a really good friend of mine, and he's so laid back and down to earth," said Henman.
"I beat Federer in the final at Basle [Federer's home town] three or four years ago and he was crying his eyes out. When he won Wimbledon in 2003 he was bawling his eyes out. He's just a really emotional guy. He's honest enough to say 'this is who I am'."

Wow! Soderling takes it! AMAZING! Go FED go!!!! Go FED go!!! Go go go!!! :) Aller Roger allerrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
sky , 6/5/09 4:43 PM
I think it is ONLY fitting that Robin Soderling beat Gonzo, although I wanted the Gonz to win. After all it was Soderling who beat Nadal. Let's see what he can do against the FED. I honestly believe the FED will make it to the final, and/but... let's see what happens. the FEDS game is much trickier then the Gonzo. Soderling will have the time of his life to try to beat him. the FED will prevail, with a few clever net plays and drops, but it will not be easy. We all know it's not over tell it's over. The FED still has to win against Del Potro... At least this is how I imagine it. Go FED go!!! Go Roger Go!!! Aller! Aller! Aller! Roland Garros VICTORY FED!!! :) YOUR THE BEST!!!!

but played has played....as at today.....something like 12 hours of play during the week.....he had his 'FIVE SETTER' with Haas as we know....Sod has had his FIVE SETTER today...but he still not completed as many hours in the tank as fed....but we shall see...eh?
Roger will be under no illusions what he has to do....and he will do it...Always believe in him.....it's not difficult to be in that positive zone right now...'cos I don't wanna go or be anywhere else......

ONE MORE SET DELPO ONE MORE SET ... VAMOSSSS !!! WOOOHOOOOO
Raindrops , 6/5/09 7:07 PM
i think roger himself can't understand why he's making so many errors. guess it's one of those days when yr head tells you to hit it this way & your limb is going the other way.... oh well...
kazuo , 6/5/09 7:07 PM
Roger should get to the net more often, to try to disrupt his play, I shouldn't be giving him free tips :)
posmatrac , 6/5/09 7:08 PM
No not really Cheryl..........Roger has not been playing well throughout this whole tourney.....he moved on relying on his 'escape artist' play!......i just wondered how long before things would finally catch up with him!
However, I hope Fed makes it thru........bcos many of these players are chokers!!!!!
MonaLisa , 6/5/09 7:10 PM
posmatrac, we don't really want Federer to lose points here do we?!!
stu , 6/5/09 7:10 PM
DELPO BELIEVES TOO< IN HIMSELF and he has silenced the French crowd w/ his game.....wow
zoey234 , 6/5/09 7:10 PM
MonaLisa Del Potro may lose, but if he does I can assure you it will not be from a choke... Go Roger Go!!!!! COMMON FED!!!!
sky , 6/5/09 7:12 PM
Yeah, you should charge him for those words of wisdom, Postmatrac the Wise.
Nylon , 6/5/09 7:13 PM

posmatrac , 6/5/09 7:14 PM
zoey...this IS a semi final to behold.......try not to deviate tho'.......whatever happens....fed has made history...20th slam semi...but WE WANT MORE AS FANS....
I dont care what anyone says.....the fact that he 'the favourite' is bullshit...he is THE one under pressure and always has been.....make no mistake.......every other player...gonzo, sodo, delpo have EVERYTHING to play for and ZERO to lose.....so he just gotta try and play a bit more free......too much at stake...but fed been here before and he'll be here again.......
zare... the more you say what you say...trust me buddy...the more I realise you AINT no tennis fan but the JOKER OF THE PACK.........
C'MON Federer!!!!!!!
malteser1 , 6/5/09 7:15 PM
Del Potro's best bet is to win this fourth set....if not.....he WILL lose bcos i fear Del may get really nervous in the final set and Fed has been known to say that he brings on his game in the final set!

vamosrafa , 6/5/09 8:48 PM
Wouldn't you know I had to go in to the office today of all days, and couldn't see a bit of the match? I followed slamtracker from the website, and was on pins and needles. I do love JMDP, and it sounds like it was a most excellent match.
Real men cry - there, I said it. I am hoping they show the match in its entirety here in the U.S.
Malty, zoey, sky, Arvis, fedexfan, tnj, torres, max, and anybody else I've missed: you guys are a big reason why Roger won! You believe. Keep on believing! Roger will need the world's support. This Soderling dude is a crazy guy, but I know Roger will come out guns blaring, with laser focus.
GO FED!!! You're still THE ONE!
Fed Fans Unite!!!!
Rafterfan , 6/5/09 8:50 PM
Maybe I do fancy del Big Boy-Man? :D
I sent him just enough for 4.25 sets and then.......was all Federer babee all my love goin right to happyland Pareeeeeees and Chartrier for that lovely Swiss Maestro
the Gonzo Soderling taped match came on NBC here during Feddy match on RRG.. but as luck, yes luck would deign NBC does not do live anymore or today anyways....I get to watch match with you Malty!! 'bout the same time.
I don't know Malts, I think I did ok "visualising" Old McDonald Farm today.
zoey234 , 6/5/09 8:53 PM
Wow... My head is spinning from utter tension.. Never have I want someone to win so badly.... Delpo is very good and i would say have the Grand Slam mentality just below Roger and Rafa. He will definitely win a Grand Slam. I think after Fed retires I will root for Delpo. His face is calm and he takes point by point by point. That's how you can get to Rog-Rafa level.
I think next year there will be a Big 5.... ROGER!!!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!! Thanks for showing me the example of handling pressure which is by just be calm and relax. If you do not win RG, then God just dont want you.
But still, you are the best in my eyes and many others.
torres9 , 6/5/09 8:54 PM
good luck roger and his fans.....rafa fans!! plz pray for our champion...hope he gets 100% ready for wimbledon....altho sum mtch practice wud have helpd!
vamosrafa , 6/5/09 8:54 PM
Go, Roger FO champion 2009!!
Somewhere on a beach in Mallorca while taking a break from surfing, Rafa says
" but I always said he was the best ,no?"
Nam1 , 6/5/09 8:58 PM
I love JMDP, torres and zoey. He is my 2nd favorite player right now behind Roger. Used to be 3rd or 4th b/c of Santoro and Roddick, but I've moved him up in my top 5.
Rafterfan , 6/5/09 9:01 PM
I just saw the last part of the match ...JMDP was in tears .....i feel for the Argentine ....so much respect for him now ...
I hope you punks dont start bad mouthing JMDP now cos he was cryin on court ....its emotions ...cant hold it in ....so much respect for del potro ...
I think that enuff or celebrating ...we need to look towards the final .....one match at a time !!! .....Fed will be facing an attacking player ....and he is gona go for broke ! ...nothing to loose ...all to gain ....im sure Fed will be prepared .
Im actually quite happy its soderling ...its gives rafa fans some sense of justice that rafa's opponent made it to the finals ...gona be a tough one ...but WE trust in our man !!
C'MON !!!
fedexfan , 6/5/09 9:01 PM
Thanks vamosrafa, you truly have class. This RG showed me how good Rafa is to be able to deny Fed for 4 times. Rafa's mental toughness is definitely the best. It's hard enough to win against Fed's skills but to be able to outlast him is not an easy thing to do.
Delpo was unlucky. He fought until the end. Both of his wings is dangerous. I never saw Roger get thrown out of the court like that except by Rafa. Delpo's backhand and forehand is just sick. The slices didnt work at all at the early part of the match. Fed needed to use fire because all of the slices are being attack as it it was not a slice.
HANDS UP TO DELPO.
torres9 , 6/5/09 9:02 PM

malteser1 , 6/5/09 9:10 PM

torres9 , 6/5/09 9:12 PM

posmatrac , 6/5/09 9:16 PM
cheers :) Sleep time...
torres9 , 6/5/09 9:17 PM
Epic match. Unveleibable.
Roger played extremely nervious and Delpo was ON FIRE. But oh my god, I think I've never seen Roger put so much BALLS in a match in his entire career.
And for the haters, Delpo didn't choke... not even close. Federer turned out this match with the greatness of a champion.
Emiliano55 , 6/5/09 9:17 PM
zoey - what is up with NBC? They need to get their priorities right!
(I can see why you cheered a little for JMDP - I just love him--but not as much as Fed!)
Rafterfan , 6/5/09 9:28 PM
Federer fans, Federer fans! What a wonderful match. I have never admired Feder more. DelPotro was on fire and still Fed came through. I can't believe some of the comments here. How mealy mouthed and small minded not to acknowledge the extraordinary talent that is TMF!
deuce , 6/5/09 9:28 PM
Deuce, thank-you.. But were you posing, as Nylon? Nylon played a key part in my shuttle not breaking up on entry into atmosphere!!
Yes Rafterfan and now.....a soap opera... I don't know...sad
stu.....try not to be so cranky about the caps, sorry. I suppose its excessive
Maybe no caps on Sunday..gotta caps while ya can. no caps stu :(
zoey234 , 6/5/09 9:36 PM
I felt sorry for Del Potro he started brilliantly but over the course of teh game his serv % decreased whereas Federers improved. You could tell that the pressure of the occassion was taking its toll on him. Hopefully he'll learn from this and move on, an extraordinary talent who can challenge the big 3(Djokovic ofc). I'd like to see him in a GS in next 2/3 yrs
lee214 , 6/5/09 9:39 PM
zoey.........don't worry about stu...he just sore...hopefully cheryl will understand the passion of the fedfans right now......
deuce....so good of you to say that.....well done my man......
He is extraordinary you are right......and Emiliano...i don't quite believe you said that? are you feeling alright?....

sky , 6/5/09 10:03 PM
Hello People, I was "watching" the match on th slam tracker, being really nervous while attending patients here on the consult, I am sorry i wasnt here with you...
I havent seen a single match, but I think this is a great, or one of the greatest grand Slam for years to come, So much passion, so much irreverence. I said Before that Roger needed to play djokovic to get the preparation for a final against Nadal, whel I now believe that thank to Juan Martin, he will be able to face the Monster opponent that is Soderling... we havent seen something like this before, maybe with Tsonga on AO 08, but seeded 23 and beating Ferrer, Nadal, Davydenko and Gonzales?. So now both players have to face a very tough opponent, Soderling having to face (now without doubt) one of the greatest, in pursue of history ( although he already made history), And Roger has to face a wild, bungry, thirsty, and out of control beast, who may think that this is his last chance to get a GS trophy, is going to be a Nuclear explosion of tennis... and i wont be able to watch it.
To all fedfans, congratulation!, i was really nervous during the whole match, and again difficulties reveal true heroes, true champions, He is our hero, after 5 sets of strugle and staying alife!!!, This is ROGER FEDERER
mdmch , 6/5/09 10:04 PM
My stomach is already in knots. I watched that vid fuzz put out on another post about Soderling / Rafa in Rome. grrrr!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CnX6k0snxA
That guy better not try to cheat! Oh, I gotta run - they are getting ready to finally televise the Fed/JMDP match! Better late than never ;-)
Rafterfan , 6/5/09 10:07 PM
Got it sky...aren't you just smiling and beaming and busting up! So happy had to thank myself twice. Did not get steeaamed. realized the Fed haters, are just that. The ones cheering, sincerely supportive of Delpo? Can't blame em Malts :)
I was channelling mdmch from the jungle and all his metaphor just hit me...no caps here though excited.
Sky, Malteser all fedfans get some rest for Sunday. no caps
Robin Soderling has my respect Nylon. He defeated Rafa, Nikolay, Gonzo
Can't even conjugate a name for Sunday match. tongue is tied
A winner....?
zoey234 , 6/5/09 10:11 PM

You'd better believe it girl....otherwise am gonna kick your ass!
Love you zoey...sky...ALLFEDFANS....REJOICE!!!
C'MON!
malteser1 , 6/5/09 10:18 PM
No. Nooooo. Malty. I am a commited Devotee. I am simply celebrating kinda quietly, content and at peace for the moment. The nightmare zoe was yesterday. Were you just wound up yesterday? Man. Eeeyoow.
chuckling at you though, praises curses all gods, exclamation point
Sad thing is I have not SEEN the match yet. Have not seen the sleeveless one from Tandil on screen or Our Maestro.
Must admit I am thinking of Robin Soderling a lot, more than a FEDFAN like me should. I did SEE part of that match. What the hell is wrong with NBC? I mean Both semi's are important but the 13 GS slam champ Roger Federer match dumped for Martha Stewart. OK, end of that story.
Robin has to be considered Malts. He is icy cooool calm blisters and all.
zoey234 , 6/5/09 11:59 PM
torrres9...the way u commented on the rafa-roger combo in that blog where we were wishing rafa his birthday...u also showed class..:D ..cheers...matador and the bull...so on....if roger wins on sunday ..i dont kow...wht word to use to describe his feats..at slam level..in terms of consistency there is no parallel to this man ..rafa is goin gr8..just pray for him to stay healthy...so that we can have another classic wimbledon final!!
vamosrafa , 6/6/09 12:00 AM
Lucky you, Rafterfan, 2 hours ahead there its Oprah in the Rockies.
Torres is a class act Vamosrafa. Yeah....the Fed is legend for consistency unparalled, Vamosrafa. All the consecutive wins and length at the top, getting to 20 finals. He had a rough year physically last year and still #2.
Rafa is in great hands Vamos. He resting up, recoup'ing for Wimby. Rafa is a phenomenon too.
zoey234 , 6/6/09 12:55 AM
As i said before, some things can't be predicted in tennis. The semis played today were OUTTA this world! Delpo took 2 sets for The Fed? wow, just wow. Delpo shown a huge talent when i saw him against Robredo, so this may lead to many more tournaments. (Delpo winning against the whole top 10 isn't a dream anymore guys!)
Also, checked the official page of Nadal. He apologies for not being able to compete in Queens this year, due to some problems with his knees. Is good that he will be back and sounding for Wimbledon.
Ariel , 6/6/09 2:38 AM
zoey....this is for you honey....LISTEN....i know how you feeling...i really do...but I WILL ALWAYS be positive about federer....because so many people write him off already and it just is not right........i will be watching your comments girlfriend!! (you are a fabulous poster zoey...just keep believing.....!).
You say you worried about soderling? you been saying you been worried about EVERY opponent that fed been playing all tourny...so read the following.....
Federer has been up against the 'big servers' for what...10 years? (i'll leave out sod for a minute...)...he has always had to return an Andy Roddick Serve...(the best on the tour.....if you look at the stats with all the 'big hitters'...andy comes out on top)...also...you are right...fed is NOT a big server....but then NEITHER is nadal.....(will talk about rafa in a minute)....Soderling has come into his own in this tournament...
he has blown apart the field with his new-found confidence....that's for sure....and absolutely fair play, he deserves his place in the final tomorrow.
Roger was up against Del potro who played 'a blinder' in terms of serves...he had the fastest serve in the tourny yesterday..(stats would show)...he served at 232 kmh...which i think works out at 140 mph....so del boy is ahead of sod in terms of 'the fastest serve'..(as analysed in game by jason goodall yesterday).....
so we have sod - brilliant server, del boy, fabulous server, federer....who can play a great serve.....
what federer has is a whole different game to soderling...yup.....no denying that sod is a power player.....but you cant win a match on serves alone and this is where federer is able to come into his own...he can nail soderling tomorrow with his own bag of tricks....more volleying, more drop shots, more drop shot returns...this works for him...make no mistake...
he may not be the most powerful player out there, but HE is the ONE player who mixes up his game so much that the opponent doesn't know what to expect....he has VARIETY.....look at what monfils said in his interview...go read it...when he talks about Roger's game...it is a PHENOMENAL game.....rafa...of course....he is still the king of clay...absolutely...no one is denying that...even roger....
So fedfans.....yep...the final ride is tomorrow...but i really think that (zoey)...you should have more faith in fed....we have been on a long journey together and it aint been easy...but i absolutely 1000% have belief that federer can up his game on sunday even more....and i actually feel that he is going in as the underdog...not the favourite....soderling has nothing to lose......SIMPLE as that.
C'MON ROGER!
malteser1 , 6/6/09 10:23 AM
deuce and vamosrafa:
how nice of u two!! you're fans with class,it's nice to see ppl who cheer for thier own fav and respect the others as well.
vamosrafa: I'm sure Rafa will be as strong as ever for the Wimbledon...he has had that problem for a while and he's used to it..:) still I'll pray for him!
niloofar , 6/6/09 12:53 PM
niloofar: thanx. I just love the beautiful game and find things to like and admire in all the top ten players. Don't like stupid, personal insults about fellow bloggers or posters and bad language, no need. We're all here to enjoy the ride, yes?
deuce , 6/6/09 1:06 PM
Oh, dear goodness me - I idolise Rafa even more than AZN2NVY and I have just realised that A Certain Other Person has actually played more singles matches at RG in the five editions 2005-09 than he has, 34 to 32 when you include tomorrow. I am so depressed! Rest up those knees, Rafa - the only reason you are ever defeated - then come back next year and sort that out - Vamooooooooos!
gorafago , 6/6/09 1:38 PM
Hey fed....NO PRESSURE!
Federer deserves to be called the greatest, says Agassi
PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - Roger Federer will undoubtedly become the greatest tennis player to have graced the sport if he wins the French Open, Andre Agassi said on Saturday.
Agassi, one of only five men to have achieved the career grand slam, said he expected Federer to join the select club by beating Sweden's Robin Soderling in the Roland Garros final on Sunday.
"It ends the discussion of where he fits in the history of the game," the American said during a visit to Roland Garros with his wife Steffi Graf.
"If it wasn't for (four-times champion Rafael) Nadal, he probably would have won a handful of these things. So nobody would underestimate where he deserves to fit in this game.
"This is going to mean so much to him, to have that hole filled. It's something he's going to earn tomorrow and I think it will change his life."
If Federer completes the feat, he will join Don Budge, Fred Perry, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver and Agassi as the men who have won all four majors. It will also give Federer a record-equalling 14th grand slam crown, putting him level with Pete Sampras.
Agassi said winning the Musketeers' Cup in 1999 defined his life, even though he won seven other major trophies during his career.
"It changed my career and as result my life," he said. "It's probably the most profound moment in my career, getting over obstacles and doubts I had coming to win here," said Agassi, who was beaten in two finals before he completed his collection.
"Tomorrow there's a chance to see history and I think Roger being the second best clay courter over the last five years, earning a spot in the final four different times, deserves this more than I did.
"It would be privilege for the game to see history being made and in some ways it feels like destiny for him and it's going to be pretty exciting.
"He's extraordinarily talented and talk about grace on court, watching him play is something special to see and if he does it tomorrow, he'll know what an accomplishment it was."
Keeping the belief and the 100% focus for our man for tomorrow!
C'MON!
malteser1 , 6/6/09 5:34 PM
niloofar...thnx alot ..=)....i hope ur thought abt rafa's comeback is 100% true....rite now i am planning to do 2 things....pray continually for my champion to get back on track ASAP..secondly, to SALUTE roger federer if he wins tomorrow ..cheers =)...bt i do want atleast a 4 set battle :D
vamosrafa , 6/6/09 8:02 PM
Vamoseafa, speaking of Rafa, watching the womens' match this morning, I heard one of the sport announcers on NBC say the knee might keep Nadal out of Wimbledon. Nope what I hope for Rafa, missing Wimby. But think of the upside if it happens: since Rafa missed snagging the calendar year grand slams by falling to Soderling, why not have Rafa reat the kness, play a lighter schedule than he has and prepare to take the US Open? Winning 4 RG, a wimby, an ao and the us would give him all 4 grand slam titles and a spot in what has eluded Fed his entire career. Of course I believe Fed will win tomorrow and if not tomorrow, sometime, but it's not gonna get easier. It wouldn't be a bad thing for Rafa to rest. The pressure will be on Murray at Wimbledon. Not wishing Rafa ill. But if the knees need rest...
Would not be a bad strategy.
zoey234 , 6/6/09 10:34 PM
Wow! malteser1!!!! WoW!!!!!
Agassi quote:
"Tomorrow there's a chance to see history and I think Roger being the second best clay courter over the last five years, earning a spot in the final four different times, deserves this more than I did. "
Thank you for sharing this interview malteser1! It means so much to me to hear a GREAT CHAMPION like Agassi share so much admiration and respect for our FED! He understands in ways it is only possible for a person that has been there. Very powerful!!! Very very POWERFUL! I'm sure Agassi and many other Champions from the past have spoken to Roger if only briefly to encourage him and just to say we BELIEVE in you Roger!!! Go out there and have FUN!!! Go out there and ENJOY the moment!!! ENJOY who you are and just let it happen buddy, just let it happen!!! Wow!!! Go FED go! Go FED go!!! FEDfans Unite!!! Being a FEDfan is an HONOUR!
sky , 6/6/09 10:55 PM
Malteser....see my above post to Vamosrafa, I cannot type, words missing; simply hoping to get point across that team Rafa no doubt will make lemonade outta lemons, if Rafa needs extended rest.
And I am deviating Malty but not in the way you might think. I believe in Federer's strength. The womens Final was on at like 6 am and was sad to see Dinara lose, especially wiping tears away. Great match though from Kuznetsova.
After the womens final NBC blessed me with the final set of yesterday's match: Federer v Delpo. Federer hit a cross court backhand 2nd serve return that looked like 2007. Delpo certainly did not choke and his serve, his movement for 6'6 just gets better. Huaaaan coulda won Malty and something tells me he will win in a similar situation next time.
Robin is not gonna wait for a next time, Malty. He wants it now. I saw the Soderling interview and he is not going to flinch tho this is his first slam final. New Robin sees himself as RG musketeer cup holder.lol
Ill read your post again....I was working mwah! malty
zoey234 , 6/6/09 11:06 PM
zoey...darlin'.....listen...i can feel your nerves...honestly......i don't underestimate the enormity of what is going to happen tomorrow....
fed tonight will be surrounded by the love of his team.....honestly...his wife, his trainer, his coach, dinner with friends..am pretty sure he is going to relax with physio...chat with family...lovely circumstances.....of course he gonna be nervous as hell...who wouldn't be...
soo... back to basics.....Federer will play as well as he can tomorrow...on the day....if he is the better player on the day...he will win....he will ALWAYS be THE champion...no matter what hateful posters want to say tomorrow...their choice...their loss by not accepting what a journey fed has come on...through...and made to reach the final....i am soooo excited...it cannot be put into words..but i will NOT DEVIATE ONE LITTLE BIT tomorrow from my complete faith in his game and knowing that he CAN pull this out of his magic bag of tricks...
i don't listen to what the commentators say when he misfires a shot...i just concentrate on all the positives of his game...it is THE only way...so try to do the same honey....try to keep the faith and believe in our man...what will be will be...so just BE tomorrow....okay?
C'MON!
Federer....we believe.....!
malteser1 , 6/6/09 11:23 PM
zoey234..i get ur pnt mate :D...uncle toni said that rafa's xtensive tests and treatment wil begin from mnday !! plzzz ..everyone...even if u are nt rafa fan..plzz pray for my rafaa!! afterall ,who doesnt want another classic wimby final??:P
vamosrafa , 6/6/09 11:38 PM
Yes, yes Malt! I won't be as freaked ( maybe more ! ) NBC is broadcasting live early morning. I believe them this time cos I watched most of women's final this am.
Someone like me can't comprehend how Roger Federer endures the pressure, has accomplished what he has , continues to win faced with bigger and younger
opponents on the world stage. Really an astonishing human. Yeah, I keep in mind he has Mirka and his team giving him strength and he has US....
WE FEDFANS Love our Champ!!
Vamosrafa, already done, mate
zoey234 , 6/7/09 12:00 AM
hello vamosrafa..............dont be so worried mate,it will be ok!!!!! rafa will rest nd get better,he will play wimby for sure!!!

vamosrafa , 6/7/09 11:30 AM
vamosrafa: give your man a good slap and tell him to get plenty of rest! The beautiful game needs him back in fighting fit form! Best.
deuce , 6/7/09 1:06 PM
An excellent analysis, as usual.
"Federer should roll over Del Potro in straight sets..." Yes, he should, and I hope he does. But I am still nervous. Del Potro says he hates playing on clay, but he has been ROCK solid in this tournament. Maybe he didn't have a very difficult draw, but still... There's been so many upsets in this tournament, I worry it's contagious.
