Roger Federer is hoping to solidify his place atop the ATP table in 2010, with the longtime dominator of the game remaining keen to impress.
He remains on track in his opening ATP date in Doha for a final with main rival Rafael Nadal.
"I'd like to stay No. 1," said the Swiss. "Getting back from No. 2 (in 2009) was very hard work,” said the 28-year-old 15-time grand Slam champion.
Hot on the Federer tail is not only Nadal - who seized the top ranking in August 2008 and held it until last summer - but challenges from Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Juan Del Potro.
"I want to stay No. 1 for as long as possible. I'm sure if I stay healthy, I can win tournaments and stay No. 1.”
Federer said that his fitness is no longer an issue after niggles over the past two seasons. "I'm healthy now and I know I can win many more tournaments than I did last year (four).
"Last year was fantastic, but I'm looking at one match at a time. There’s pressure from yourself, pressure from fans, your team. But I play better under pressure.”
