The injury pullouts are starting to build as the run-up to the weekend start of the French Open approaches, with Russian Dmitry Tursunov joining David Nalbandian and Japan's up-and-coming Kei Nishikori in missing out.
The Tursunov absence pales next to that of Argentine Nalbandian, who underwent hip surgery last week in Barcelona and will be lucky to play before the end of the season.
An automatic absentee is Frenchman Richard Gasquet, whose positive test for cocaine revealed last week rules him out of all competition pending the inevitable months of expensive legal appeals.
Nishikori has not been on court since losing a first-round Indian Wells match in mid-March, victim of an inured right elbow.
He is apparently expecting to be fit in a matter of a fortnight after being given a wildcard into the Queen's event in London, which marks the start of the one-month grass-court campaign and starts the day after the Paris final.
