Marat Safin has volunteered no detail regarding a Moscow punch-up one week ago, with the Russian arriving at the Hopman Cup in Perth looking the worse for wear.
The 2005 Australian Open champion stepped off the plane and went off to a tournament gala still carrying his racket bad. He had little to say about the bruising around his eyes and his sore hand.
While refusing to reveal exactly how he got hurt, the 28-year-old did manage to also see the tournament doctor. His first explanation of the mysterious incident was far from plausible: "I've been working out hard... actually, I got in trouble in Moscow.
"I wasn't in the right place at the right time," added the double Grand Slam champion. Tournament boss Paul McNamee said that Safin's management had asked for a later start for the team, but he was unable to accommodate due to the schedule. "I take my hat off to him for showing up," he said.
Safin combined with his No. 3-ranked sister Dinara Safins for the first time to defeat Italy in group play at the eight-nation Hopman Cup.

Wouldn't we all love to know the details... But shouldn't the bigger news be that he confirmed for certain that 2009 is his last year! Hope to watch him play in Melbourne!
