Ivo Karlovic is into the Wimbledon quarterfinals after ousting Fernando Verdasco in four sets on Monday. Karlovic will now take on world No. 2 Roger Federer.
Fernando Verdasco became the latest victim of Ivo Karlovic's booming serve, going down to the 6'10'' Croat in four sets on Monday afternoon. Karlovic's 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-6(9) victory earned him a place in his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal and set up a showdown with world No. 2 Roger Federer.
Not unlike many Karlovic matches, the outcome of this one was in doubt the entire way. The No. 22 seed pulled out set one in--not surprisingly--a tiebreaker. Nine aces for Karlovic helped him take the opening frame of play, in which neither man ever got a look at a break point.
More of the same continued throughout the second, as another tiebreaker ensued following no breaks and no break points. This time, however, Verdasco came up big in the decider and leveled the match by taking it seven points to four.
Despite having momentum in hand, the seventh-seeded Spaniard let it slip away as his service percentage dipped in set three. Karlovic only managed to win five return points during the set, but he won them all in a flurry. Not surprisingly, a single break was easily enough for Karlovic to seize the third set 6-3.
Karlovic continued to dominate on serve in the fourth, but after the one hiccup in the third, Verdasco once again matched his opponent hold for hold. Just as he had to do in his previous match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Karlovic finished Monday's thriller in a tight fourth-set tiebreaker. Verdasco won two straight return points for a 6-5 lead, but Karlovic smashed a second-serve return to save set point. After saving two more set points, the Croat finally finished off Verdasco 11 points to nine.
Karlovic's 14 fourth-set aces brough his total to 35 for the afternoon (against five double-faults). He also won a ridiculous 89 of 95 first-serve points (94 percent). Karlovic is 1-8 lifetime against Federer, but scored his lone victory of the Swiss just last summer at the Masters Series Cincinnati.

Federer's view
Q. How do you prepare to play against someone against Ivo Karlovic?
ROGER FEDERER: Same as I do against other players. I like those sort of challenges, you know. I mean, it's maybe not the most fun match to go through. But I like to beat this guy, you know, because he makes it hard on us, you know, to beat him. He's become an excellent player. Not only just his serve, he's got to have something more otherwise he wouldn't be ranked where he is and he wouldn't be beating all those good players.
He's not to be underestimated. I've played him on all surfaces in my career: indoors, outdoors, grass, clay. I've even played him here, so I would like to play him.
and
ROGER FEDERER: I played him in Indian Wells this year. I thought it was a tough match. Had it under control. He came back. Was supposed to win the second set. I think he served for the set there.
But he's a great player. He's really improved I think the last nine months since he won Davis Cup and played so well in Australia. He's always been dangerous, you know. He's always had that. But just now he seems more stable in his game and his mind and everything. This is obviously a big test for him right now.

The thing i like about roger federer is his honest arrogance he knows he will beat this guy. There are a lot of guys out there with this hypocritical humility .
So rog rock the KArlovic serve so that and teach him a lesson or two about how to play tennis ,
cheers.......

Karlovic out to ace Federer
Ivo Karlovic is hoping his greatest weapon will continue to serve him well after claiming his place in the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time.
The Croatian has troubled all of his opponents so far with his huge serve, and Fernando Verdasco barely got a look-in during their fourth-round clash on Monday. The 22nd seed will now take on Roger Federer ton Wednesday and Karlovic is aware he will need to produce a performance similar to that which saw him past Spaniard Verdasco 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 7-6 (11/9) on Court One.
"Against Verdasco I was feeling good on my serve," said Karlovic, who served 35 aces. "It's unbelievable he did not (create) one break point."
He added: "The only thing that I was a little bit unlucky, in the last tie-breaker, he returned a few unbelievable shots, but other than that I was feeling good on my serve. Of course I'm really happy because I'm in the quarter-final."
Five-time champion Federer saw off Robin Soderling in straight sets to set up the meeting with Karlovic.
"The important thing is that I keep on moving in the draw, that I'm playing well," said Federer.
fed needs to stay positive...and believe in his game...like he has through the whole of the tourny....gonna be a good match tomorrow...and am sure roger will know what to do.....
C'MON!
Allez Federer!

huh?
So jibi, are you saying good things or bad things about roger? don't follow very well ..'honest arrogance' doesn't seem like a nice thing to say about someone! (especially cause there's nothing arrogant about the interview - thx malty for posting it btw - peace - )

I'm gonna pull a "Ricky Dimon" and say that there is NO WAY IN THE WORLD that Dr. Ivo beats Federer in a Best-of-5 match. I 100% guarantee that Federer will be in the semifinals by the end of Wednesday. I'll eat all the crow in the world and take all my lumps happily if I'm wrong.

*laughs* My my non-Ricky Dimon-like prediction is that Dr. Ivo has a real chance if he handles Federer's serve well. I doubt he can for three sets, but maybe.

This is what Greg Rezedski has to say:
"Giant Ivo Karlovic is the big danger to Roger Federer in the bottom half of the draw.
I said the Croat was the dark horse at the start of the tournament because his serve is such a massive weapon on a grass court.
Karlovic sent down 46 aces in blowing away No.9 seed JoWilfried Tsonga, and another 35 in beating No.7 seed Fernando Verdasco. He also equalled his tournament-best serve of 141mph yesterday.
If Karlovic serves like that in the quarter-finals it will be Federer's first serious test of the Championships. The 6ft 10in Croat gets so much bounce as well as pace onto his serve that he can sometimes be unplayable."
It's OK to be optimistic, but to just dismiss Karlovic out of hand (1:8 or not) when they've nearly all been tie-breaks is not a realistic way of viewing things.

Karlovic would have a much stronger chance of winning in a Best-of-3 match. Ace all he wants, he still has to deal with Federer's serve and all-court game. Ivo can barely move side-to-side and still struggles to get down low for those slice shots. Not only that but his groundstrokes are cheese off of both wings. Does this sound like a guy who can take out Federer on grass?
Malty: Hey, I'm only here for today. My work schedule doesn't allow me to keep up-to-the-minute with these matches, (I record them on my DVR and watch them after work) which is why I'm never around during Slams, but here every day immediately following. The reason I'm here today is because all of my favorite women's players are already out, so I don't care to actually watch any of the matches that are being broadcast today.

Shireling , fedex always had honest arrogance and why not he is h greatest player of all time , and that is never a bad quality.... humility is always more or less the sign of fear... if u dont agree with me chek out any of rogers previos interviews, and all ur soubts will vanish.....

Too bad for Verdasco.... he had his chances and didn't take them and if you have a human missile launcher like this guy in front - you got to take those chances!
If he keeps getting those ridiculous stats with his serve, Fed will be hard put to scratching any break point at all. But those 1-8 stats speak for themselves...
