  • Tursunov, Haas cruise Gerry Weber Open

    6/8/09 11:08 PM | Ricky Dimon
Dmitry Tursunov and Tommy Haas ease into the second round of the Gerry Weber Open on Monday. They are joined by Rainer Schuettler.

    (6) Dmitry Tursunov d. Igor Kunitsyn 7-5, 6-4

Tursunov has been plagued by injuries this season, but the fast grass courts in Halle helped his powe game at the Gerry Weber Open on Monday. Tursunov dispatched fellow Russian Igor Kunitsyn 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes to set up a second-round meeting with either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Bjorn Phau. Kunitsyn had plenty of chances to turn the tide in this match, but he was undone by serving at 44 percent and missing eight of nine break-point chances. Tursunov, who put in 61 percent of his first serves, broke late in the first set and converted both of his break chances in the second to score the relatively routine victory.

(WC) Tommy Haas d. Stefan Koubek 6-2, 6-2

Haas, who turned around his game with a fourth-round appearance at the French Open, continued his fine form with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Koubek. The veteran German advanced to the second round after a mere 59 minutes of work. Haas won an amazing 78 percent of the points even when he had to toss in a second serve, while Koubek took just 42 percent of his second-serve points. Koubek never broke Haas, but he did have two opportunities in the second set. Haas dropped only four points in his four service games during the opening frame of play. Next up for the wildcard entry is either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Fabrice Santoro.

    (8) Rainer Schuettler d. Marc Gicquel 6-3, 6-4

Schuettler has been in dismal form, but perhaps a return to the grass courts will help him right the ship. The veteran German reached the Wimbledon semifinals last summer and on Monday he rolled over Gicquel 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 20 minutes. Gicquel, a baseline counter-puncher, had little answer for his opponent's aggressive play and flawless net game on a slick surface. The Frenchman had his chances, but he squandered 10 of 11 break points. Schuettler served out the first set at 5-3 after a single service break, and he used two more breaks in the second to close out Gicquel with little trouble. Fellow German Benjamin Becker will do battle with Schuettler in round two.
