  • Soderling rallies to reach French Open championship

    6/4/10 8:07 PM | Kelli DeMario
Fifth seed Robin Soderling advanced to his second consecutive French Open final on Friday, after rallying from two-sets-to-one down to take out 15th seed Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

French Open finalist Robin Soderling is through to his second final in a row at Roland Garros, following his comeback win over opponent Tomas Berdych. The World No. 7 successfully dug his way out of a two-sets-to-one deficit to record a five-set victory in three hours and 27 minutes. With the semifinal-round win, Soderling improved his season record to 27-9. The 25-year-old will make his third ATP World Tour final appearance of the year on Sunday, adding to previous successes in Rotterdam (winner) and Barcelona (lost to Verdsaco).

Soderling struck first, earning a service break at 3-2 on a double fault from Berdych. The Swede passed through the opener untested, as he reached triple set-point at 5-3. A trademark forehand blast closed the 6-3 set in 33 minutes.

Berdych led 2-1 in the second set, aided by patches of errant play from the Swede. The Czech had two chances for an insurance break at 4-1, but failed to convert. Berdych served well throughout to hold set point at 5-3. An ace cemented the set for Berdych, who leveled the match at the 72-minute mark.

After losing a 2-1 break advantage in the third, Berdych snagged a lead at 5-5 as Soderling missed a backhand. The Czech continued to serve well, hitting three aces in the 12th game. Berdych crushed an ace on set point, ending the set at 7-5.

Soderling broke in the sixth game of the fourth set, as Berdych netted a backhand. The Czech, unable to recover the break, began to miss on the first serve. After saving break point at 5-3, the Swede evened the match with another forehand winner.

The deciding set had the players trade early service breaks to 1-1. Soderling collected triple break-point at 3-3. Still unable to improve his first-service percentage, Berdych dropped serve with a costly backhand error. Match point came at 5-3 for the Swede, who ended the afternoon as the Czech pulled a backhand wide.

Soderling finished the match with six of 13 break points converted, and 62 winners to 63 unforced errors.

The World No. 7 will meet four-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal for the title on Sunday. Nadal came through his semifinal match with 22nd seed Jurgen Melzer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(6).

its possible!

RickyDimon , 6/4/10 9:26 PM

Correction: It's NOT impossible.

ed251137 , 6/4/10 9:52 PM

it is possible i think, but rafa is the favorite.

vamosrafa , 6/4/10 10:11 PM

As long as Rafa doesn't play like he did in that third set, and Sod plays like today, we'll see a five time champion at the FO this year.

It's a pity that Berdych ran out of steam in the fifth set. He is one that will give Sod lots of problems each time they meet. Berdych has to improve his stamina, his ROS and his ground strokes, in order to go the distance in slams and beat players like Sod. In Masters series best of 3 set matches, Berdych does not have such problem(stamina issue) hence we see him beating Sod in Miami this year.

Hard hitters like Delpo/Verdasco/Berdych are bad match ups for Sod, despite he being a hard hitter himself. In addition, Fed who has all the varieties can also deal with Sod; and Rafa who prior to FO 09 had always beaten Sod and come Sunday I expect Rafa to get the better of Sod once again.

luckystar , 6/4/10 10:30 PM

Sod is in Nadal's head. Sod is that odd guy that isn't intimidated by anybody. Nadal won't sleep much these days. All the pressure is on him. He's been labeled the King of Clay. How can he be the best on clay if he loses to Sod 2 years in a row? What will he say? What possible excuse can be made this time? Sod won't be nervous as he's had the experience of being in a final of this GS last year. He's in great shape, had 2 days before today's match and won't be tired. Nadal has been quick to anger this week with his sliding form. He will be highly irritated when he can't get to Sod's powerful shots. His anger and disdain of Sod (since Wimbledon '07) will consume him and he will self-destruct. Just imagine if he loses, he can't run to the locker to curse this year. He'll have to feign some complimentary, congratulatory words to the winner and smile for pictures. Watch out for Sod at Wimbledon this year too. He is dangerous!

Few words for an answer: No one can touch a healthy Nadal on clay.

actually it appears NADAL is in chr18's head......which seems to be pretty empty...

VAMOS!!!

vrael , 6/5/10 6:58 AM

Ha ha Rafa is really in chr18's head. Chr18 please grow up! It does not mean that if you keep repeating something all the time, it will happen. We don't control other's destiny! Learn to face reality and be a good sport.

when you think they ran out of questions:interesting one

Q. Since you played Rafa here last year, he's mentioned a few times or more it was implied that the knees were a problem or other things were bothering him. Has that bothered you that maybe that was some sort of excuse for his performance that day?
ROBIN SODERLING: No, I never thought about it. Well, I think he's definitely not the only player who has some problem with his body. I think we all have that from time to time. So I never really thought about it.
You know, I was very happy with the win and my run here last year. I still am. It doesn't matter who I played or who I beat or if he was injured or not

while Mr. judge of charcter said:
Q. Well, it doesn't matter.
RAFAEL NADAL: 2007? Yes, it matters. (Laughter.)
2007, but after that, no, I didn't have not one problem with him. I think he's doing well, and at the same time he improves his level of tennis. He improve his level of kind of person, no? I think he improve his personality the last year.
Q. How?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think he say more times hello to the rest of the yeah, I am speaking serious. I am speaking in the positive way, not in a negative way. Sure.
Q. He didn't say hello earlier?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think he was very shy in the beginning. I think so, no? But I think he improves a lot. For sure for me is good to have a player like Robin playing at this high level in the tour.
It's a different kind of game, and, sure, he's a special one. Because the serve, his very flat shots, are very impressive.

Rafa you are big champ but get over your self already!
it is realy very tough against 4 times champ but who knows, may be he can do the impossible and make Rafa hold the tary instead of the cup!

congrats robin!!
you kept your date with superman of roland garros..
but batman's sidekick ain't gonna harm superman!! :P

clayking , 6/5/10 12:58 PM

Soderling has a shot at the title for sure-as long as the conditions are damp as forecasted. Im not going to look too deeply into this match-unless condtions are sunny on the final. Damp conditions will mean that Sod has more time to set up his huge groundstrokes, and he will make less unforced erros as the air resistance is more and the ball is haeavier.(so his groundstrokes will drop in more often)

tj600 , 6/5/10 5:13 PM

Good point tj. You know what's funny? Last year they said Sod did well at RG because it was hot and dry and the courts were playing fast like indoor courts and there wasn't enough clay on the courts to slow them down. Now it's apparent that he plays well with slow conditions as well. Sod is just a clay court monster these days.

chr18 , 6/5/10 5:30 PM

@chr18
true. when hes on the top of his game, hes good on any sort of clay, but he is better on the slow, damp clay.(as he showed in his matches against Federer and Cilic)

tj600 , 6/5/10 5:33 PM

Nadal will play every single point like it's the last. Soderling has to wait more for a Grand Slam title.

June 10/2010.

The R G Tournament was or could in exasperation connected with the pure moment of discovering new dimensions, colour, plus our human value. We are at the start of something even better a new era, and I felt it during the Tennis Open. I believe the games will hopefully change for the best.

Even if Robin Soderling did not triumph, it looked as if the two men were delighting unconditionally in the big opportunity. The pummel achievement to Rafael Nadal, taking too, along with his many others, The 2010 Roland Garros Tennis Championship No.1 Prize. An enhancing prospect. The Evolution.
