The surprisingly efficient Nikolay Davydenko followed up his first ever win over Roger Federer on Saturday afternoon, with a straight set victory over Juan Martin Del Potro.
Nikolay Davydenko was not to be denied. Maybe the title was his destiny, a reward for finally defeating Roger Federer after 12 failed attempts. In fact, Federer’s domination over the Russian was so complete that prior to Saturday’s semifinal match, Davydenko had only managed to win 3 sets total.
The Russian was supremely confident going into the final. Del Potro went in at a disadvantage, having played his semifinal late into last night. Davydenko was quick to spot the Argentine’s slight flat-footedness right from the start of the match. He crowded the baseline and sent Del Potro scrambling (a position that makes the towering Argentine uncomfortable).
The reward of his aggressive game paid off almost immediately for Davydenko. The Russian secured a service break at 2-1 – and held it through the end of the set to take the lead.
Del Potro attempted to pull his game together in the second set. He even had some chances to break Davydenko’s serve at 2-3, but the Russian pulled out 2 outstanding serves on the break points to hold.
Once again left flat-footed and tired looking, Del Potro walked up to the service line at 4-4, serving to stay in the match. He was not able to muster the energy required to keep up with the Russian. Del Potro quickly found himself down 3 break points – Davydenko converted on his first opportunity. The Russian served out the tournament with a pair of aces.

congrats nikolay, technical tennis vs. ball bashing, but delpo is still young and will improve (already possesses great tournament pick skills!).

So David slew Goliath. Hooray! Way to go Davydenko, show everyone how it's done. As postmatrac said technique and gr8 variety v. massive strength and little else. Tennis wins!

The best comment I heard on this match was from Delpo," He plays like playstation."
That was hilarious.
Congratulations to Davydenko, he really deserved this title, hope he can keep up his level in 2010 and see more grandslam contenders.
Looking forward to watching delpo next year.

Even though I like Fed, I think I am more happy than if Fed won this title, Fed already reached 4 slam finals, won too, what more can you ask? I like Delpo too but I wanted Davy to win this match. Delpo looked so disappointed after loosing but that is how he should be so he can keep the fire going as he is so young. Fed did not look good after loosing to Davy but that can also be understood because he does not know if he ever get a chance to play in WTF. I am not writing off Fed but it is not unlikely given his age. In the end looking forward to 2010, tennis looks interesting than ever.

I hope Davy will be healthy though out 2010 and squeaks though to win a GS in 2010 which would be a real justice for this great player.

i got to say at least not a defensive player won this master,Davy is an attacker a shot maker which ends Murray domination of masters which is great,i thought since the mid of 2008 masters was all Murray show which am more than pleased for not going any further maybe he just needed Fed to get him solved which is totaly was the highlight of this torny, the one bad thing was about torny was Nadal i hope he can battle again get to his old self am not his fan but tennis is not as charming without him something is different he is 23 and am sure he will be back to amaze us again by himself so i can go back here next year and call him names
COMON: Roger and Rafa!
